This year, all ages can celebrate Earth Day. Whether you want a fun activity for the kids, you want to learn more about important issues like global climate change, or you want to get your hands dirty and make a difference in your community, Earth Week 2008 has something for everyone. Seethe full schedule below.

Highlights include:

  • The Leave Your Car At Home Day challenge;
  • Great Lakes Compact Forum
  • A showing of the 11th Hour with discussion following the film
  • The annual Baird Creek Clean-Up;
  • The EcoJam concert;
  • The Izaak Walton League’s Bear Hunt in Bellevue, a special event for families and
    children.
  • Rain Barrel and Composting Demonstrations

EARTH WEEK EVENTS, APRIL 19-27

Saturday, April 19th

9:00am-Noon—Fox River Clean-Up (kid-friendly, student volunteer hours) St. Francis Park in Green Bay
Bring gloves and join the Friends of the Fox River to clean up the river’s shores!

1:00-4:00pm—Great Lakes Compact Forun: The Health and Sustainability of the Great Lakes, featuring Peter Annin, author of The Great Lakes Water Wars on the UWGB Campus, Rose Hall, Room 250
Keynote speaker Peter Annin, author of The Great Lakes Water Wars, discusses how a Great Lakes Compact can safeguard the Great Lakes from water diversions.  Panel discussion to follow.

Sunday, April 20th
9:00-11:00am—Take Back the Pavement. Broadway Street in downtown Green Bay
See Green Bay’s streets transformed into artistic greenery displays by local organizations, businesses, and individuals! 

Monday, April 21st
6:00-8:00pmWhat’s all the Woof about Wolves?  featuring Naturalist Cindy Mueller (kid-friendly)
Brown County Library, 515 Pine Street, Green Bay
Naturalist City Mueller, volunteer with the state’s wolf tracking and howling program for over 18 years, discusses wolves and their remarkable comeback in Wisconsin.  Find out how to identify wolves and learn about their behaviors and lifestyles. 

Tuesday, April 22nd
10:30-11:00am—Earth Day Storytime (for families with preschool-age children)
Brown County Library, 515 Pine Street, Green Bay
Learn Seven Simple Things even the littlest kids can do to help protect the environment through funny stories, songs, and rhymes.

5:30-7:30pm—Earth Day Recycled Craft Projects (kid-friendly)
Brown County Library, 515 Pine Street, Green Bay
Create an ecologically sound masterpiece using recycled materials at this drop-in, self-guided activity for families.
Adult supervision required for younger children.

Thursday, April 24th
All Day—Leave Your Car at Home Day Challenge!
City-wide!  Bus, bike, walk or carpool to work or school!  See how much gas money and energy you can save!

7:00-7:30pm—Storytime at Barnes and Noble (kid-friendly)

Friday, April 25th
6:00-9:00pm—Free Showing of The 11th Hour starring Leonardo DiCaprio
Brown County Library, 515 Pine Street, Green Bay
A portrayal of humanity’s powerful impact on our planet.  Discussion to follow led by UWGB Professor Mike Draney and former Ashland Mayor, Fred Schnook.

Saturday, April 26th
9:00am-Noon—Willow Creek Clean-Up (kid-friendly, student volunteer hours)
Meet at the NEW Lutheran cul de sac at 8:45am, 1311 S. Robinson Avenue, Green Bay
 Join Marty Jacobson in this first-ever clean up of the parkway!

9:00am-Noon—Baird Creek Clean-Up (kid-friendly, student volunteer hours)
Triangle Hill, 500 Beverly Rd, Green Bay
Lend a hand picking up litter and removing invasives at Green Bay’s own Baird Creek!

9:00am-11:00am—Demonstration on Rain Gardens at Christa Mc Auliffe Park

1:00-3:00pm—Rain Barrel and Composting Demonstrations (kid-friendly)
Triangle Hill, 500 Beverly Rd, Green Bay
Want to save water or reduce landfill waste?  Learn how to build your own rain barrel and start composting in your backyard!

5:00pm-Midnight—EcoJam, featuring local favorites including Burnt Toast & Jam and Kojo (kid-friendly)
Holiday Inn City Center, 200 Main St, Green Bay
A musical celebration to commemorate Earth Week.
$5.00 per person(Only $4.00 with a used cell phone donation)

Sunday, April 27th
Noon-4:00pm—Teddy Bear Hunt in Bellevue—food, fishing, family fun, geo-caching, crafts & more! (kid-friendly, student volunteer hours)
Osprey Point on County GV in Bellevue, about a mile south of Hwy 172
A family ‘hunting license’ costs $10.
